Post 12: Accommodation problem
Ok let's have a second try. There was a technical accident and so my first draft ist gone 🥲 Nevermind, I'm gonna sum up the main content. Sorry dear reader!! 🙏🏼
Why I changed my accommodation
To answer in just one sentence: The lifestyle and rules of my first landlady Bridgitte didn't fit with my needs - privacy and freedom.
This is a part of the contract she gave me in the evening I arrived:
As you can see, there are quite a lot wishes. To compare with my actual accommodation, I didn't sign any contract. The only rule is to keep the kitchen and bathroom as tidy as possible. But there might be a difference between private properties and kind of hostels.
I'm really grateful for Bridgitte's openness and for all the things she did for me, but you will understand why I left her property after reading this:
and more.
It was a bit too much. I forgot to close the window, I didn't plugged out the consent, etc. I was overwhelmed in the first week after arriving because the work was hard and I didn't have any friends.
And finally she found the broken oven door in my room before I could say it to her because she went in my room while I was working at the orchard. He went in to close the window. From that point I felt really unwell because my privacy was kind of hurt and I felt observed. I started thinking of changing the accommodation but didn't know how to tell her that's. Luckily she suggested first:
My answer:
I got this message on Wednesday 15.10 at 7am. Fortunately work started later than usual so I had time to pack all my stuff. Jorge drove me to the accommodation.
Fun fact: another tenant Zared (he drove me to Whakatane) was also kicked out :D He didn't like the property for similar reasons.
My current accommodation
My new landlady is called Glennis, she's the grandma of us all :) As I told her my story she gave me two free nights 😭🙏🏼 So I made her some sushi.
I'm paying 170$ a week (so 30$ cheeper than the previous one), until last Friday I shared my room (it's actually a small house with much space) with a lovely mexican girl Fatima ♡ For a few days we worked together at the same orchard!
Room tour
We're 14 tenants (6 backpacker, 8 Indian) and we're living in different houses. It has a beautiful garden and lit of space and freedom :)
My house
Entry: As I'm the only one now using this house, I have my own fridge & freezer, a mirror, a table and some chairs.
Bedroom: It's directly connected to the entry space.
Kitchen & bathroom
We're sharing 3 kitchen, one is for the Indian, one inside for everyone and one outside for the backpacker.
I really like the outside kitchen, because there's mostly nobody and it's quite. We had some parties here :)
But I also use the inside one because it has an air fryer, rice cooker and a "quesadillas machine" (that's how Jorge and I call sandwich maker)
Bathroom
We're also sharing 3 bathrooms, one for women, one for guys and one for everyone. The last one is hidden so I use it often.
That's the one for guys, here is the only washing machine.
I'm so happy with my new accommodation :) Thank you Glennis and Jorge!

Next post will be about Pala, my favourite conductor/supervisor at the orchard 🥝
